Karwar: Chikki manufacturing units will be started to empower distressed women, said Minister for Women and Child Welfare Department Shashikala Jolle.
Addressing the gathering after laying the foundation stone for the proposed unit, she said that various programmes have been chalked out by the department for the uplift and empowerment of the distressed women. The Chikki manufacturing unit is one such programme, which aims at providing employment to women and making them financially independent.
“Chikki is one of the products being supplied to Anganwadis. Chikki is a sweet brittle energy bar/ snack made using peanuts and jaggery. It is considered nutritious and hence is being supplied to Anganwadis. This is the project planned by the local DC, Zilla Panchayat CEO and Women and Child Welfare Department Deputy Director. I am extremely happy to see that such plans are being chalked out,” she said adding that the same project has received a cash award of Rs 50 lakhs from the centre.
A sum of Rs 25 lakhs, she said will be utilised for construction of the manufacturing unit and the remaining Rs 25 lakh will be used to procure machines.
Deputy Commissioner Harish Kumar, CEO, Roshan, MLA Roopali Naik among others were present.
