Karwar: The work on two new units of 700 mw capacity each at Kaiga will begin from 2020, said Kaiga Unit 3 and 4 Director JR Deshpande.
Addressing a news conference at Kaiga Atomic Power station office, Deshpande said that the new units will start generating energy from 2026.
“The units have got administrative and financial approval. Environment related studies too have been completed. The unit V and VI will start functioning from 2026 and will generate a total of 1400mw power,” he said adding that Karnataka will get 50 per cent (700mw) from the total power generation, which will contribute to state’s exchequer. This will also meet power demand and help industries of the state, apart from generating employment.
He said that environmental clearance was availed for starting seven units way back in 1987 and 1665 hectares land was allotted by the government when the project was planned.
“We have 54.09 hectare land for starting the units. We do not need additional land. Hence we will not venture into land acquisition,” he said.
