Kerala Introduces Fake News Detection in School Curriculum
The Kerala Government is making strides in digital literacy by incorporating ‘Fake News Detection’ modules into the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) textbooks for Classes 5 and 7. This initiative aims to equip students with essential skills to identify and fact-check fake news and malicious content online.
The move, ahead of similar plans by the UK to revise its primary curriculum, reflects Kerala’s commitment to digital literacy and responsible internet use.
Key Points:
- Curriculum Details: The Class 5 ICT textbook features a chapter titled ‘Let’s Search the Internet,’ focusing on effective screen time management and recognizing fake news. The Class 7 textbook includes ‘Let’s Search and Find,’ which emphasizes verifying information and understanding the legal implications of spreading false information.
- Implementation: This initiative builds on Kerala’s 2022 training program, which educated nearly 20 lakh students on digital media literacy, fake news, and its societal impact.
- Future Plans: The state plans to expand these modules to other classes and introduce basic AI education in the upcoming academic year.
K Anvar Sadath, CEO of Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “The new ICT textbook includes chapters that embody the spirit of Satyameva Jayate, helping students navigate the digital world safely.”
This proactive approach positions Kerala as a leader in digital literacy education, aiming to prepare students for a more informed and responsible online presence.
