KSRTC & BMTC Staff to Stage Hunger Strike Over Unmet Demands
The United Employees Union representing KSRTC and BMTC personnel has announced a hunger strike scheduled for June 10 at the NWKRTC central office in Hubballi. The protest aims to push the government to address a range of unresolved issues faced by transport workers and to implement already-issued official directives.
Union president K.R. Vijay Kumar, addressing the media on Saturday, criticized the state government for failing to act on a wage revision agreement. “Despite repeated appeals, the government has not made any decisions. If no action is taken by May 31, we will launch a movement to offer free travel for men under the Shakti Yojana,” he warned.
He also highlighted inconsistencies in how fines for ticketless travel are being enforced. “In NWKRTC, penalties are applied from the beginning to the final stage, unlike in other transport corporations, where they stop at the inspection phase,” Kumar said. He argued this uneven policy has unfairly led to job losses for several conductors, leaving them without support or recourse.
The union has reportedly raised these issues multiple times with the corporation’s leadership but has received no acknowledgment or resolution. “We urge the government to ensure uniform enforcement and follow its own directives,” Kumar demanded.
The union maintains that the protest is a final call for justice and fairness in the treatment of public transport employees across the state. Unless swift action is taken, broader agitation may follow.
