Leopard killed by vehicle hit on busy highway in Andhra Pradesh
A leopard tragically lost its life after being struck by a vehicle on the Vijayawada national highway in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh, on Monday morning. According to reports, the animal lay severely injured on the road for over an hour, but onlookers were too afraid to approach it.
The forest department was not informed about the incident in a timely manner, causing further delays in responding to the situation. Meanwhile, the vehicle responsible for the accident fled the scene, leaving no trace behind.
A video footage revealed forest officials later covering the leopard’s body with cloth and leaves. Authorities confirmed that the animal’s remains had been removed, and a search for the offending vehicle is underway.
This incident mirrors a similar event earlier this month, when another leopard was killed after being hit by a speeding car on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway near Kashi Toll Plaza in Meerut district on January 16. In 2023, a similar tragedy occurred in Ghaziabad when a leopard was struck by a vehicle.
Leopard sightings in urban areas have been increasingly reported recently. A notable case involved a leopard entering a residential complex in Sohna, Haryana, earlier this month. It was safely captured after a lengthy four-hour rescue operation. Officials believe the leopard may have entered through the parking basement, either seeking food or fleeing territorial disputes with other leopards.
