Leopards Spotted in Bengaluru Urban Region, Forest Department Issues Safety Advisory
Two leopards have been recently spotted in the Bengaluru Urban range, specifically within the Bengaluru North sub-division, causing concern among residents. Forest department officials confirmed the presence of these big cats in the Shivakotte Gram Panchayat area and its neighboring villages, as reported by The Hindu.
Shivappa Hossamani, the Range Forest Officer for Bengaluru Urban, stated that the authorities are closely monitoring the movements of the leopards. To ensure public safety, the forest department has issued a public advisory urging residents to stay alert. “We have been conducting awareness programs to educate locals on precautionary measures. Experts have also been brought in to train residents on how to respond if they come across a leopard,” Hossamani added.
To protect the community, the department has ramped up night patrols and set up cages in an attempt to capture the elusive leopards. Despite these efforts, the animals have remained difficult to track.
A video circulating widely among resident welfare associations showed two leopards roaming near Ramagondanahalli, and surveillance footage from a nearby property captured the animals near a parking lot on the night of January 23. There were also reports of a leopard sighting in Electronics City, but an investigation revealed that it was actually a wild cat.
Frequent leopard sightings have been reported in areas like Banashankari, where urban expansion is increasingly encroaching on forested land, keeping forest officials on high alert.
