Mangaluru: KMC Hospital in the City has launched a School Scoliosis Awareness Campaign to detect Scoliosis, a spinal problem that occurs in school children, at an early stage.
“The aim is to reach out to parents and teachers of schools in Dakshina Kannada, Kasaragod, Udupi, Hassan, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and North Kannur Districts’ 200 primary and secondary schools in the next one year.
If Scoliosis in children is detected in the beginning itself, it can be completely cured without surgery,” said KMC Hospital Spine Surgery Specialist Dr. Ishwar Keerthi.
Scoliosis is a problem with the spine bending to the side. It occurs in 2 to 4 per cent of children. For most children, it’s cured on its own. One in every 6 children diagnosed with Scoliosis will require surgery, he said and added that the problem is more common in girls.
The campaign on reaching out to schools by KMC is part of National Scoliosis Awareness Month.
