Love on Facebook leads to illegal stay: 3 Bangladeshi women nabbed in Delhi
In a significant move against unauthorized migration, the Foreigners Cell of Delhi’s North West District Police detained three Bangladeshi nationals residing unlawfully in the Mahendra Park locality. The arrests were made following a planned operation launched in the early hours of May 15.
One of the women revealed she had formed an online relationship with an Indian man on Facebook. He later assisted her in illegally crossing the border from Bangladesh through West Bengal, after which they began cohabiting in Delhi. To avoid detection, she presented herself in the area as a transgender individual, known locally as Deepa.
The investigation began with a tip-off and a Facebook video reel that revealed a nearby ice cream vendor and surrounding structures. Using these visual clues, authorities scanned almost 50 narrow streets to pinpoint the suspects’ location. A trap was then set to arrest the primary accused.
Further inquiries led to the apprehension of two more women, who initially claimed to be Indian citizens living with their spouses. However, inconsistencies in their statements, along with evidence recovered from their mobile devices, contradicted their claims.
Among the seized items were two smartphones and a keypad mobile, all reportedly used to communicate with relatives in Bangladesh via the banned IMO app. Upon deeper questioning, the trio admitted to entering India via Hili and Benapur, later traveling to Delhi by train.
The women have been handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for deportation. Officials are probing further to identify local aides.
