Mangaluru: There is an adage that goes-‘Make hay while the sun shines’. While the whole world is reeling under the corona crisis, the fraudsters have taken the adage seriously and are all out to make hay while the sun shines.
Believe it or not, there are online fraudsters, who are making gullible people fall into their trap, promising them compensation during the Corona crisis.
A link “FG lockdown Fund” has been circulating on WhatsApp group, which promises people Rs 5,000 as lockdown compensation.
If one clicks the link, it will ask for a confirmation that the user is an India.
As soon as the user confirms the same, he/she gets a message:” Congratulations..You will get compensation of Rs 5,000, if you forward this link to WhatsApp group.”
After this, the user will get a whatsapp message seeking bank details, debit card number, password and OTP number.
If the user provides these details, then he is sure to lose money from his bank account.
Cyber expert Ananth Prabhu, speaking about the online fraud, has asked general public not to share bank details, OTP number among others.
“These are difficult times. Fraudsters will be out there with one plan or the other to loot gullible people. There are no lockdown compensation schemes that will work on whatsapp or social networking sites. People will have to be extremely cautious and alert,” he says.
The said link is being forwarded over the last four days as it is a message that demands forwarding of the same to at least seven people to avail the promised ‘benefit’.
Meanwhile, yet another mode of online fraud is also being heard of.
It is said that certain miscreants have been contacting people and asking for bank details, claiming that a huge relaxation can be availed on their bank EMI, if they give their bank details.
