Mangaluru: Animal husbandry ministry Prabhu B Chauhan on Tuesday, announced that cases against “cow vigilantes” will be withdrawn as the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act has come into effect.
It can be recalled that the law against the slaughter of cows came into effect in the state on January 18 after an ordinance was passed by Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala.
According to the order issued by the state government, violations will attract a jail term of three to seven years and/or a fine of up to Rs 5 lakhs. Subsequent offences will attract a fine of up to Rs 10 lakhs and a prison sentence of up to seven years.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to the city on Tuesday, Chauhan said that cases that were registered against cow vigilantes earlier, will be withdrawn and that he has directed the police department to withdraw the cases against Karnataka Rakshana Vedike activists.
