Saanidhya Institution To Organise Vaccination Drive For Children With Special Needs From May 25 To 29

Mangaluru: In association with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Department of Welfare of Disabled and senior citizens, Saanidhya Residential School & Training Centre for the Mentally Challenged will hold a vaccination drive from May 25 to 29, for the children with special needs, in and around Mangaluru.

“This drive is being held as per the Karnataka High Court order to vaccinate people with special needs on a priority basis,” said Dr Vasant Shetty, Administrator of Saanidhya. “The order said that all physically and mentally challenged persons should get vaccinated,” he said.

There is no registration required for this drive in which one caretaker who comes along will also be eligible for the vaccination. Details of the ones getting vaccinated will be collected at the various centres. The camps are being organised for those between the age of 18 to 45 across 7 centres in Mangaluru. On the first two days, May 25 and 26, the drive will be held at Saanidhya Residential School & Training Centre, Shakti Nagar. This will be followed by the camp at St Agnes Special School, Mangaluru and Chetana Child Development Centre, VT Road on May 27, Adamya Chetana Day Care Centre Ullal and Lion’s Special School, Surathkal on May 28, and, St. Mary’s Special School, Kinnigoli and Spoorthi Special School & Training Centre, Moodbidri on May 29. The drive will take place from morning 9:30 am till evening 2:30 pm.

Speaking to News Karnataka about the impact of Covid on the lives of the students there, Dr Vasant said, “caring for disabled children especially autistic children, is a very difficult task and the parents are facing a very difficult time during the lockdown.” They have many problems and behavioural issues which has to be taken care of and becomes a tremendous task since the school has closed down,’ he added.

Being a residential school, the institution had 115 students between the age of 5 to 52 living there and about 50 to 60-day scholars, prior to Covid.
