Mangaluru: As the Dakshina Kannada district administration has denied entry to ambulances from Kerala, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, people from Kerala have now started a social media campaign asking others to reject hospitals in Mangaluru.

It can be recalled that a few days ago, an elderly woman from Karnataka, who was being brought to her home state from Kerala in an ambulance, died after she was denied entry into the DK district at the Talapady check post. This incident sparked the anti-Mangaluru hospital social media campaign.

It can be noted that many private hospitals in Mangaluru are filled with the patients from Kerala, as the district is very close to the Karnataka-Kerala border. As there are advanced medical facilities in Mangaluru, compared to the hospitals in Kerala, many Keralites opt to get treated in Mangaluru hospitals.

There were mixed responses from the public about the Dakshina Kannada district’s move to seal its borders to prevent the people from Kerala entering the district. Some people have opined that the health sector should be open to all, irrespective of their origin and some others have justified the district’s move.

It can be recalled that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan approached the Central Government to direct Karnataka to open its borders and allow the passage of essential commodities’ transport vehicles. A Kasargod MP also moved the Supreme Court, asking it to direct Karnataka to open its borders. However, the state government has ruled out the opening of the border to any transport from Kerala, including ambulances, as COVID-19 cases have been increasing day by day.

If the new social media campaign receives a good response and people stop opting for Mangaluru’s hospitals after the borders are once again opened, the city’s profile will definitely fall.
