“Mangaluru Bank Manager Loses ₹2 Lakh to Cyber Fraud”
A 38-year-old bank manager from Mangaluru, Vasudha Gopalakrishna Shenoy, became a victim of an elaborate cyber scam, losing over ₹2 lakh after clicking a fraudulent SMS link. Unlike conventional scams involving fake deliveries or job offers, this case highlights a more sophisticated digital fraud technique, reported India Today.
Shenoy received an SMS with a link to ‘Interviewshine.co.on’, which appeared to be a genuine job-related opportunity. Unaware of the risks, she clicked on it, unknowingly exposing her Gmail and Amazon accounts to hackers. The malware-laced link compromised her phone, allowing fraudsters access to sensitive financial details.
Soon after, unauthorized deductions totaling ₹2,19,500 were made through her bank cards, Amazon cards, and credit cards. Upon realizing the breach, Shenoy lodged a complaint at the CEN Station, where a case was registered under Section 66(D) of the IT Act and Sections 318(2) and 318(4) of the BNS Act.
How to Stay Safe from Cyber Scams
🔹 Avoid Clicking Unknown Links – Always verify job-related or financial messages through official websites.
🔹 Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) – Use Face ID or OTP-based security for online accounts.
🔹 Monitor Transactions Regularly – Report unauthorized deductions to banks and authorities immediately.
🔹 Verify Before Engaging – Cross-check suspicious messages before responding.
