Mangaluru: Elderly Couple’s Home Evicted Amid Legal Dispute, Plea for Mercy Killing Ignored
Kadaba: An elderly couple’s appeal for mercy killing has been overshadowed by an eviction drive at Kaukradi, Kadaba taluk, where Radhamma Muthuswamy and her spouse were forced to vacate their home on government land. The couple had resided there for six years after reportedly purchasing the property for Rs 50,000, though it is classified as government land.
The dispute began with a suit filed by Ashok Acharya from Belthangady, challenging the couple’s encroachment on government property. This led officials to issue an eviction notice, instructing the couple to vacate in February last year. However, strong public backlash delayed the eviction. Recently, authorities resumed action, leading to a forceful eviction where household items were thrown out, leaving the distressed couple in tears.
The eviction was supervised by Kadaba Tahsildar Prabhakar Khajure, RI Prithviraj, and Uppinangady police. The Kadaba Tahsildar is expected to submit a compliance report to the High Court, as directed in response to a pending writ petition. The eviction highlights ongoing legal and ethical debates around encroachment, property rights, and the plight of vulnerable individuals living on government land.
