Mass Resignations Loom as Mangaluru Congress Minority Wing Protests Murders
Mangaluru’s political scene is witnessing upheaval as discontent brews within the Congress party’s minority wing. Shahul Hameed KK, president of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Minority Cell, announced that a wave of resignations is expected from Muslim members disillusioned by the spate of communal killings and deteriorating law and order in the region.
A meeting is scheduled for 2:30 PM on Thursday at Shaadi Mahal, where 300–400 Congress members—including booth-level workers and prominent leaders—are anticipated to resign collectively. Hameed emphasized that this move is voluntary and driven by frustration. “Religious hate crimes are becoming frequent. The home department has failed to maintain peace. How many more innocent lives must be lost?” he asked.
He also condemned the unchecked hate speeches and rising fear among citizens. “Public anxiety is so high that the city effectively shuts down by 7 PM. Students are scared to come to Mangaluru. A few miscreants are destabilizing the entire district while authorities remain passive,” he said.
In a related development, former Mangaluru Mayor K Ashraf submitted his resignation as vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee. Citing rising violence and the administration’s failure to protect minorities, Ashraf criticized both the state’s inaction and the Sangh Parivar’s alleged role in fostering hate.
Ashraf, who held several elected positions including mayor, said he was deeply pained by the murder of Abdul Rahiman and other acts of communal aggression.
