Maternal deaths in Karnataka spark alarm: Government under scrutiny
The recent maternal deaths at Bellary District Hospital (BIMS) have heightened concerns across Karnataka. Investigations into the five deaths are ongoing, but a troubling audit reveals 23 maternal fatalities in Bellary district within just eight months.
According to District Commissioner Prashant Kumar, these deaths, reported since April 2024, are attributed to malnutrition, anemia, and complications during childbirth. On November 9 alone, 14 caesarean sections were conducted at BIMS. A sudden decline in health led to two deaths that day, with subsequent fatalities among seven transferred patients occurring over the next two weeks.
The crisis is not isolated. Raichur district reported 10 maternal deaths in three months, with four occurring in Sindhanur Taluk Hospital. Disturbingly, all had received the same IV solution used in Bellary. Similarly, Belgaum district recorded 29 maternal and 322 infant deaths in six months due to delayed treatment, excessive bleeding, and alleged medical negligence.
A tragic case from Kadur, Chikkamagaluru, highlights alleged doctor negligence at a Bengaluru private hospital, resulting in a mother’s death after childbirth.
The rising maternal mortality rate has placed immense pressure on the state government. Health authorities face demands for immediate interventions, better facilities, and accountability to prevent further loss of lives.
