Meerut Woman Dies by Suicide After Losing Pet Cat
In a tragic incident from Meerut, Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, a 36-year-old woman allegedly took her own life after being unable to cope with the death of her pet cat. Identified as Pooja Devi, she reportedly kept the feline’s body with her for three days, believing it would come back to life.
According to Circle Officer Deep Kumar Pant, Pooja had been living with her mother and two brothers in Hasanpur since her divorce a decade ago. She had been struggling with depression for years and was under medical treatment. Three years ago, she found a stray cat and cared for it as her own child.
When the cat passed away on Thursday, she refused to bury it. On Saturday evening, unable to accept the loss, she hanged herself in her house, with the deceased pet lying beside her.
Her mother, Gajra Devi, recounted how deeply attached she was to the cat, saying Pooja had been sleeping with the dead animal and was devastated when she realized it wouldn’t return.
After a postmortem, police handed over her body to the family.
