MLA Kamath Slams Govt Over Rain Relief, Calls for Immediate Action
Mangaluru: Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath convened an urgent meeting with Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) officials on Friday to address pressing issues affecting his constituency, particularly in the aftermath of recent heavy rains.
During the meeting, Kamath criticized the state government for allegedly failing to release relief funds meant for emergency repairs to homes damaged by the rains. He highlighted that numerous residents within MCC limits are enduring hardships due to rain-related destruction.
The MLA recalled that during the previous BJP-led administration, a decision was taken to allocate up to ₹40,000 in relief per home for emergency repairs, covering 10 homes in each of the 60 wards during natural disasters. With the BJP no longer in power and the MCC now under Congress-controlled district administration, Kamath expressed strong disapproval that no such relief has yet reached the affected public. He insisted that the prior council’s resolution must be honored and funds distributed without delay.
He instructed officials to undertake immediate restoration of rain-affected areas, prevent future flooding in residential zones, and swiftly address issues related to garbage disposal and potable water supply.
Kamath further alleged that financial incentives previously awarded to sports achievers and support for cultural programs have also been unfairly blocked under the current government.
He blamed the Congress-led administration for failing to implement the previous budget properly, thereby neglecting public welfare. However, he added that MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik had assured timely and structured execution moving forward.
Executive engineer Naresh Shenoy was also present during the session.
