Mob fury over chant ends in fatal assault during cricket match in Mangaluru
A man succumbed to injuries after allegedly being attacked by a crowd for shouting “Pakistan Zindabad” during a local cricket tournament in Kudupu, near Mangaluru, Karnataka. Over 10 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the violent incident.
According to Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara, the individual did not die immediately but later passed away due to the severity of his injuries. He confirmed that arrests had been made and a detailed report was awaited.
The altercation took place around 3 pm on Sunday, near Bhatra Kallurti temple, during a multi-team cricket event. Eyewitnesses noted that an initial disagreement between the victim and a man identified as Sachin rapidly intensified, drawing others into the confrontation. Despite efforts from some spectators to break up the scuffle, a segment of the crowd continued the assault, using sticks and delivering repeated blows.
Police were alerted only around 5:30 pm, after the man’s lifeless body was found close to the temple premises. An investigation was launched and initially classified as an unnatural death. A post-mortem conducted at Wenlock District Hospital later confirmed the man died from internal bleeding and shock, caused by severe trauma to the back and limbs.
Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal revealed that Sachin, the primary accused, is under arrest. Nineteen individuals have been named in the FIR, and stringent charges under the new penal code (BNS) have been applied. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and digital evidence to track remaining suspects.
