Dowry harassment case: Husband arrested

Mangalore : Police have arrested Sunil Kumar, the husband of Sumitha who  had committed  suicide  by consuming  sleeping tablets. The arrest was made on December 18, Wednesday two  days after Sumitha who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital,  breathed her last.

It has been alleged that Sumitha who was unable to bear with the physical and mental torture of her husband and in-laws, had consumed sleeping pills at her parental home. She was admitted to the hospital on December 9 and died on December 16, Monday night.

Sunil Kumar and Sumitha got married on May 26 this year. But soon after marriage, Sumitha had to face dowry harassment at her husband’s home and was even driven out of her husband’s house a few days ago.

Though a complaint was initially lodged in Bantwal rural police station, the case has now been shifted to Mangalore Rural police station.

If Sunil is the prime accused in the case, the statement made by Smitha before her death has also mentioned the names of her father-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
