Gold seized at MIA, concealed in toffees and eyeliner bottles

Mangalore: The officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport on Friday March 21 once again busted another modus operandi and detected concealment of gold in the baggages of two passengers from Dubai and seized gold totally weighing 529.640 grams totally valued at Rs 15,78,327 in two separate cases.

In the first case, the officers seized gold pieces, totally weighing 298.450 grams and valued at Rs 8,89,381 concealed in toffees and further concealed in a carton box, belonging to a passenger named Davood Abdulkader Ibrahim, a resident of Paravanadukkam, Kasaragod. He arrived at Mangalore International Airport on Friday at about 4.45 am by Jet Airways fight 9W531 from Dubai.

In the second case, the officers seized gold strips, totally weighing 231.190 grams and valued at Rs 6,88,946 concealed in two photo frames and three eyeliner bottles placed in a carton box .

The gold was seized from a passenger named Abdur Rahman Kunnil Abdul Khader, a resident of Thalangara, Kasaragod. He too arrived at Mangalore International Airport on Friday by the same flight from Dubai.

Operations were conducted under the supervision of Krishna Kumar Prasad, assistant commissioner of customs, Mangalore International Airport and were led by B Prabhakara Poojary, superintendent along with superintendents Lionel Fernandes, Sendhil Murugan, B A Kariappa, H G Yogesh and Inspectors G Kumaraswamy, K T Preethi Suma, S Ranjan Behera and Ankit Kumar and Hawaldar Gulabi.

In both the cases it is noticed that the smugglers have resorted to unique methods of concealing the goods by fabricating/moulding the gold in various shapes and concealing the same in their baggages.
