Mysore: The Minister for Co-operation and the Chairman of the Karnataka State Warehousing Corporation – H S Mahadeva Prasad said on Friday May 2 that the state government will build mega warehouses in at least 8 or 10 cities to increase the capacity to stock food grains at major cities across the state.
The Corporation has taken this decision as no additional warehouses have been built since a long time. The minister visited the existing warehouses in the city and held discussions with officials on the need to strengthen warehouse network to ensure that the government has sufficient infrastructure to address the growing needs.
He added that the Corporation has not gone in for acquiring additional facilities since five decades. Setting up of additional warehouses would be helpful in the backdrop of the rise in demand in the recent times owing to strengthening of the public distribution system. The minister said he wants every taluk headquarters to have a warehouse.
At present, the Corporation has 133 warehouses with a capacity to stock 16.5 lakh metric tonnes of agri produces. The Corporation is managing warehouses for the storage of agricultural produce, seeds, manures, fertilizers and agriculture implements. Produces are purchased in Shimoga, Davanagere and Chitradurga by the government extending minimum support price to farmers.
