Will follow HC’s directions on ‘made snana’: Chief Minister

Mangalore: Chief Minister Siddaramaih said the state government would follow the directions of the High Court on the controversial practice of ‘made snana’. 

Chief Minister who was on his way to attend various programs in Udupi and Mangalore on Saturday told presspersons here at Mangalore International Airport that the state government was firm to stop the practice of ‘made snana’. 

The Supreme Court, on September 22, vacated the stay on the State Government’s proposal to modify the controversial made snana ritual. Therefore, instead of rolling over plantain leaves containing leftovers of food eaten by Brahmins, devotees can possibly take part in the ede snana, where they roll over food; offered to the deity’ at Kukke Subramanya temple.

However, the SC had directed the Karnataka high Court to hear the Adivasi Budakattu Hitarakshana Vedike, which had questioned the High Court’s verdict and sought continuation of the tradition without any change.

Siddaramaiah said, there is no need to create a controversy. We will act as per direction of the High Court on the option of ede snana. Prasadam is for consuming and not to roll over, he added.

District in-charge minister B. Ramanath Rai, health minister U.T Kadher, Urban Development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, Oscar Fernandes, JR Lobo, Moihdeen Bawa, Pramod Madhwaraj, Ivan d’Souza were among other leaders welcomed the Chief minister at the Airport.
