Mangaluru: An unidentified baby girl was rescued by the public on Wednesday, after locals noticed the infant crying near the edge of a road in Puttur. The baby is now recovering at the Regional Advanced Paediatric Care Centre (RAPCC) in Wenlock Hospital.

Dr. Balakrishna Rao, medical officer, RAPCC told newskarnataka.com that the baby was brought to the centre at 10.30am. It is undergoing treatment at Neonatal Care unit. The baby is just a day old, he added.

Reports also state that the baby has been injured, or an attempt to harm the baby may have been made, is suspected. The doctors at the Puttur taluk hospital, where the baby was initially admitted said that the baby had wound marks on her neck and one hand was fractured. Later she was admitted to Wenlock.

“There is a chance of survival”, Rao said and added that the baby is not mentally or physically challenged and is recovering.

On the other hand, Puttur Town Inspector – Manjayya assumed that the case may be a matter of an illegitimate relationship due to which the child might have been abandoned. Investigations are on, he concluded.
