Mangaluru: The only City to have 6 different names

The Coastal City of Karnataka and one of the biggest cities of Karnataka is a very beautiful place. The City is between the Arabian sea in its feet and great Western Ghats on the top. The City has a very vibrant culture and religion.

The City is home for many cultural groups and communities. Tulu, Urdu, Beary, Konkani, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi and many more languages are spoken in this part. Tulu is the dominant language here.

The City shares the boundary with Kerala state in the South and Udupi District in the North. The region is part of the Tulunadu Districts. Mangaluru is home for various industries, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and many more. Thus there are many people from different parts of the country residing here.

The unique aspect of Mangaluru is that it is the only City in the State to have as many as 6 names in 6 different languages. The Tulu speaking community here call the city “Kudla” which means junction in Tulu language. Kannada speaking people call it “Mangaluru”, where Uru means Town. The Beary speaking community calls the city “Maikala”, and in Konkani, it is called “Kodiyal”.

The City has a large number of Malayalam speaking people and they call it “Mangalapuram”. Finally, the city is called “Mangalore” in English.

There are also three other lesser known names such as Manjarun in Sanskrit, Kaudal in Urdu and Manjiloree in Arabic.

The diversity in the City feels more like India within India and there is mutual respect and understanding between the various cultural groups of the place and hence there is no confusion within.
