Protest in Kalaburagi Against Ambedkar Statue Desecration

Kalaburagi :Tensions escalated in Kalaburagi and Wadi town of Chittapur taluk late Monday night due to two separate incidents.

In Kotnur (D) village, located on the outskirts of Kalaburagi, the desecration of an Ambedkar statue sparked outrage among various Dalit organizations. In protest, commercial establishments were forcibly closed, and several shops were pelted with stones while workers inside were assaulted. Dalit activists blocked roads at multiple locations for over four hours, causing significant traffic disruptions.

Attempting to defuse the situation, Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanika Sikriwal rushed to the scene and garlanded the damaged statue. She revealed that ten individuals were undergoing questioning in connection with the incident. Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Taranum also performed a pooja in front of the statue, assuring protesters that stringent legal action would be taken against the culprits.

In a separate incident in Wadi town of Chittapur taluk, a clash ensued between youths from two communities following a procession to mark the consecration of the Ram Lalla idol in Ayodhya. One group attempted to forcibly close down a restaurant, leading to resistance from another group. Police swiftly intervened, bringing the situation under control. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the town until January 25.
