BJP Tensions Rise Over Lok Sabha Tickets in Udupi-Chikkamagaluru

Date : 25-02-2024

Chikkamagaluru : The battle for tickets among BJP leaders in the Udupi Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha Constituency has intensified as the Lok Sabha Elections draw near. A faction of BJP workers launched the ‘Shobha Hatao BJP Bachao’ movement as a result of the growing rivalry between the factions of former MLA CT Ravi and current MP and Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje.

The ‘Hatao Abhiyan’ is a continuation of the ‘Go Back Shobha’ campaign, which started with the Patra Abhiyan and Go Back Shobha Abhiyan, against Shobha Karandlaje. BJP workers expressed their frustration and questioned the efficiency of an MP who, according to reports, spends just 100 of his 3583 days in the constituency.

Simultaneously, amidst mounting discontent, supporters and workers have petitioned BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, advocating for CT Ravi to be granted a ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. BJP leaders are discomfort about this two-pronged campaign of criticizing Shobha and supporting Ravi.

Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje is the target of increasing discontent due to allegations regarding grant distribution. BJP workers have fueled discontent on social media by highlighting the alleged lack of grants for Tarikere and Ajjampur taluks between 2019 and 2024.

These developments are indicative of a larger trend in certain areas of the state toward anti-incumbency, with a growing number of people, including BJP supporters, opposing sitting Members of Parliament. Dissatisfaction with local representatives is evident, despite the fact that sentiment toward Prime Minister Modi is still positive. Neighboring constituencies such as Dakshina Kannada are witnessing similar sentiments expressed by activists against the sitting Member of Parliament, Nalin Kumar Kateel.

There is also an evident public outcry against sitting MP Ananthakumar Hegde in the Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency. In addition, internal disputes have surfaced, like the rivalry between Anantakumar Hegde and former Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri. These obstacles provide the BJP leadership with a difficult task as the Lok Sabha elections get closer.
