New Delhi: During an interview with the JK Media Group, Union Home Minister Amit Shah disclosed the central government’s contemplation regarding the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Jammu and Kashmir, indicating a potential reconsideration.
Shah emphasized the government’s intention to reduce troop presence in the Union Territory (UT), entrusting law and order responsibilities solely to the Jammu and Kashmir Police. He highlighted the evolving trust in the local police force, citing their increasing leadership in operations.
Regarding the contentious AFSPA, Shah acknowledged the deliberation over its revocation, acknowledging its controversial nature and the significant powers it grants to armed forces in disturbed areas.
He mentioned the existing revocation of AFSPA in 70% of regions in northeastern states, contrasting its persistence in Jammu and Kashmir. The issue has sparked demands for its removal from various quarters.
Shah assured the scheduling of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir before September, reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to democratic processes, extending beyond traditional political families.
Addressing concerns about reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs, Shah underscored the Modi government’s efforts in providing OBC reservations and one-third reservation for women. He detailed specific provisions made for different communities, aiming for inclusive representation.
Shah criticized leaders like Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti for their opposition to these reservations, questioning their past actions and highlighting alleged failures during their tenures.
Emphasizing a shift towards dialogue with Kashmiri youth rather than Pakistan-linked organizations, Shah outlined government actions against terrorism, including the banning of organizations and individuals involved in terror activities.
He reiterated the government’s stance on dialogue, emphasizing adherence to constitutional frameworks and rejecting the involvement of the Hurriyat Conference in the process.
Shah affirmed the Indian stance on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) as an integral part of India, expressing solidarity with residents in POK and the goal of reclaiming the region.
He highlighted significant reductions in incidents of violence and casualties in Jammu and Kashmir over the years, attributing the change to collaborative efforts and public support.
Encouraging Kashmiri youths to resist Pakistani influence, Shah emphasized Prime Minister Modi’s dedication to the region’s welfare, including initiatives to support families of martyrs.
In summary, Shah’s remarks reflect the government’s evolving strategies in Jammu and Kashmir, balancing security concerns with aspirations for peace and democratic representation.
