6.5-Magnitude Quake Hits Papua New Guinea

Kokopo: Early Monday, northern Papua New Guinea experienced a significant earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale, according to reports from US seismologists. The earthquake occurred at 0656 local time (2056 GMT), with its epicenter located approximately 110 kilometers (68 miles) east-southeast of Kimbe on New Britain Island. The quake struck at a depth of 64 kilometers.

Although the tremor prompted concern, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre swiftly reassured the public, stating that there was no risk of a tsunami. As of now, there have been no reports of damage in the affected areas.

This seismic event follows recent seismic activity in the region. Last month, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake resulted in at least five fatalities and the destruction of approximately 1,000 homes.
