“For the Sake of Sports…” Indian Tennis Legend Writes a Heartfelt Plea

Date : 17-04-2024

Bengaluru: It is very tough to be a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fan these days, as the Bengaluru team started this season on a very bad note. The team’s performance has disheartened its supporters.

Following yet another defeat in the IPL, Indian tennis legend Mahesh Bhupathi took to social media to express his sentiments. Despite having the biggest and craziest fan base, RCB’s lacklustre performance in this season of the IPL has left supporters disappointed, with many calling for change in the team.

The fans who shout slogans of ‘Cup Nammade’ (the cup is ours) find themselves at an unprecedented low this season. With just one win in seven matches, RCB is placed at the bottom of the points table. Monday’s defeat came in a valiant effort against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, where despite an entertaining display from players like Dinesh Karthik, Faf du Plessis, and Virat Kohli, the team fell short by 25 runs in a high-scoring encounter.

That match left many fans hearts broken; even Mahesh Bhupathi could not hold his emotions, and he wrote a heartfelt note on social media platform X.

“For the sake of the sport, the IPL, the fans, and even the players, I think BCCI needs to enforce the sale of RCB to a new owner who will care to build a sports franchise the way most of the other teams have done so. #tragic,” Mahesh Bhupathi posted.

Former England cricket team captain Michael Vaughan also discussed the failure of RCB as a team; he asked why the team is not performing well despite having a star-studded lineup. He noted the importance of playing as a team and that individual skill or performance is not sufficient to secure victory in team sports.
