Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam has ordered that attorneys at the Calcutta High Court are not permitted to wear advocates’ gowns, despite the summer heat wave that is continuing with daily highs of forty degrees Celsius.
According to weather department forecasts, Kolkata and its surrounding districts will experience heatwaves, or extremely hot and uncomfortable weather, for at least the next five days.
According to a high court notice, the Chief Justice has ordered that advocates’ gowns not be worn until the end of the summer vacation in order to provide relief for the legal profession in light of the current bad weather and heat wave.
“Taking note of the weather, wearing of Advocates’ gown is exempted till the Court reopens after Summer Vacation on June 10,” the notification said.
Summer vacation at the Calcutta High Court will commence from May 19.
Such exemption was allowed by the Chief Justice during the peak summer weeks last year also, Uday Shankar Chatterjee, a lawyer practising at the high court, said.
