Bengaluru’s Initiative Urges Rainwater Harvesting Preparation

Date : 19-04-2024

A new initiative named #Readyfortherains is urging Bengalureans to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season by storing rainwater and recharging aquifers. Spearheaded by water conservationist and urban planner Vishwanath S, the campaign calls on individuals and citizen groups to undertake various actions, including cleaning their existing rainwater harvesting systems (RWH), installing setups if not already in place, and desilting drains and lakes.

Preparation for Monsoon: With the southwest monsoon expected to hit Bengaluru by June 5, the initiative emphasizes the importance of being proactive in collecting rainwater. Vishwanath S, trustee with Biome Environmental Trust, initiated the campaign, stressing the urgency given the water crisis witnessed in recent times.

Optimistic Climate Patterns: Vishwanath highlights promising climate patterns like La Nina and the Indian Ocean Dipole, indicating a favorable monsoon this year. The India Meteorological Department’s prediction of above-normal rainfall further strengthens the need for preparedness.

Dispelling Misconceptions: Contrary to misconceptions, Vishwanath reassures that it’s not too late to install RWH systems and recharge pits. He emphasizes that basic RWH systems can be set up within a week, while recharge wells may take up to 10-12 days.

Mandatory RWH in Bengaluru: Vishwanath emphasizes that RWH systems are mandatory in Bengaluru, with government mandates dating back to 2011 for larger plots and expanded in 2021 to include smaller plots. The initiative aims to spread awareness through social media channels and collaborate with volunteer organizations like India Cares Foundation and Friends of Lakes.

By encouraging proactive measures for rainwater harvesting, the #Readyfortherains initiative seeks to mitigate water scarcity issues and foster sustainability in Bengaluru’s water management efforts.
