Peter Jackson’s The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a marvel of a film that is visually stunning, thematically deep, and morally profound. The three-hour fantasy-action-adventure film is based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s iconic epic classic, which has been widely lauded by film enthusiasts worldwide. It’s a fantasy novel about pure evil characters and good men who desire to defeat evil but are occasionally lured by it.

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first act of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was first released in 1954. Many directors struggled to bring this epic saga to screen. Director Peter Jackson tried and succeeded in doing so in 2001. The films received universal praise, with The Fellowship of The Ring winning the first four of the series’ seventeen Oscars.

The story is set in Middle-Earth and it focuses on the conflict of good vs evil, in which the fate of the One Ring, which has been missing for centuries, decides the fate. A group of Middle Earthers are sent to destroy the One Ring to prevent the forces of Evil from gaining access to its endless powers.

Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), a Hobbit, inherits a ring from his uncle, Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm). The ring was discovered by Bilbo 60 years before the events of this film, as revealed in the film Hobbit. Putting Frodo’s life on the line, he may be the only one capable of resisting the desire to use it. Whether he will succeed or not is left for the viewers to watch.

The film with an amazing cast led by Elijah Wood as the young hero, Ian McKellen as his wise mentor, and featuring magnificent performances by Viggo Mortensen and Sean Bean, provides the film with the kind of grandeur that is rarely seen in epic adventure films.

The opening hours of The Fellowship of the Ring tries to establish the character, their motives and also the story related to the Ring. For the same reason, I believe the first part of the film will feel extremely slow in comparison to the other two parts. But trust me it’s worth the wait!

The Fellowship of the Ring is a fascinating experience that viewers cannot help but be hooked into its universe and thanks to its special effects. The film excels in every area, starting with the small details, such as costumes, sets, models, backdrops, makeup and CGI making it an exceptional one.

I must say that The Fellowship of the Ring is a cinematic masterpiece and that everyone should see it at least once. Even after three hours, you are left with no other option than to watch the remaining two parts (The Two Towers and The Return of the King).

In the 2002 Academy Awards, The Fellowship of the Ring won Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, Best Music, original score and Best Effects, Visual effects.
