Mangaluru: Indian cities are brimming with hydrocarbons, particulate matter, CO, CO2, SO2 and NO2 posing serious health risk to city residents. India is said to have 13 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world!
Several cities are facing the direct health impacts of vehicular pollution with children being the most vulnerable. Despite the massive health impact, the government has not been very proactive about addressing the cause of the problem.
This crisis has given birth to a youth lead movement in India, in 2014 called Anti-Pollution Drive (APD). The drive took to spearhead a crusade against air pollution caused by smoke emitting vehicles and thereby to ensure a safe, clean and sustainable environment for healthy living.
This movement has gained and continues to gain immense support from both citizens and government officials alike. In October 2015, the drive was registered as trust – APD Foundation – for public service and welfare. APD Foundation aims to make people conscious about air pollution by spreading awareness, negotiating with the law makers and the law enforcement agents to implement existing laws and working with them towards deploying innovative solutions for achieving clean air.
A press release from APD says that they seek to further empower the citizens so that they can be part of the solution. We hope to provide a platform for socially responsible citizens to join hands, and collectively work towards the common goal of ridding the air pollutant and hazardous toxins.
