Mangaluru: World Cancer Day is observed worldwide on February 4 with the aim to inform and encourage people on its prevention, early detection, and treatment. Cancer Awareness Programme was organized at A J Hospital & Research Centre in collaboration with A J Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangaluru City Police and Indian Cancer Society-Mangaluru Chapter.
The programme was inaugurated by Hariram Shankar, DCP (Law & Order), Nataraj, ACP (Traffic), Dr A J Shetty, Chairman A J Group of Concerns, Prashanth Shetty, Vice President, Dr Prashanth Marla, Medical Director, A J Hospital & Research Centre, Dr Ashok Hegde, Dean, A J Institute of Medical Sciences by lighting the traditional lamp.
In his inaugural address Chief Guest, DCP Hariram Shanker expressed his gratitude to A J Hospital and Indian Cancer Society-Mangaluru Chapter for extending their support in providing awareness on Cancer and Free Cancer Screening Test for police personnel. He asked the police personnel to take advantage of this programme.
In his presidential address, Dr A J Shetty said, A J Hospital will extend support for this programme for the benefit of the police personnel, who work hard to serve and protect us, it is our duty to appreciate their service and be grateful to them. Decades ago Cancer was hard to cure and people lost lives, but now with advanced technology cancer can be cured if detected early. Cancer is a terminal ailment that calls for immediate and specialized aggressive treatment. Cancer treatment spans different modes like surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy etc., depending on the nature of the disease.
Dr Kamalaksh Shenoy, HoD, Radiation Oncology, A J Hospital spoke on signs and symptoms of cancer and emphasized the need and importance of working towards prevention, early detection and cure of cancer if checked early through various tests.
Shaila Lobo, Regional Operation Manager of Indian Cancer Society, Mangaluru explained Cancer Society of India’s role in creating awareness, early detection and treatment of cancer.
A J Hospital has a state of the art, Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre with all the specialities such as Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Haematoncology, Cancer Pain Management, Nuclear Medicine including PET-CT and Iodine Therapy Ward, which is first of its kind in the entire district of Dakshina Kannada.
Nataraj, ACP (Traffic) welcomed the gathering and Dr Kamalaksh Shenoy delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Pooja Jayaram of HR Department, A J Hospital.
The cancer screening comprising various tests is being held for four days in the hospital for Mangaluru City Police personnel.
