Mangaluru: International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed at Yenepoya Speciality Hospital, Kodialbail on Dec 3.

Since the Year 1992, December 3rd is observed as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) under the mandate of the United Nations. The international theme for IDPD 2021 is “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.” IDPD aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Book Released

On this occasion, Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail, Mangalore in collaboration with The Sam’s Clinic released a handbook for caregivers titled “Menstrual Management in the Intellectually Disabled” authored by Dr Mehnaz Abdulla at 9:30 a.m. at the auditorium of Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail, Mangalore. The book was released by Sr Maria Jyothi, founder of Mangalore’s first special school and a recipient of the Karnataka State Rajyotsava Award. Ms Vidya Shenoy, behavioural trainer and Ms Lydith Pinto, a retired bank employee were the guests of honour. Dr Muhammed Tahir, Medical Director of Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail Mangalore presided over the function. Dr Sally Mery Abraham, HOD, Dept of OBG, YMCH, Deralakatte was a special invitee for the occasion.

Free Screening Camp

The book release function was followed by a screening camp for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Free consultation was provided by our team of Gynecologist, Pediatrician and Physiotherapists who specialized in disability issues during the screening camp from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on an outpatient basis.

Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail Mangalore further dedicated itself to creating and sustaining a friendly environment for the differently-abled people and providing special OP clinical facilities for those in need. Disabled persons are given priority for all services required in the hospital. This is the first such service provided in the healthcare sector in Mangalore for girls and women with a special emphasis on gynaecological issues faced by the intellectually disabled. Our gynaecologist provided counselling to the parent and caregivers with regard to the above.
