Int’l Nurses Day observed at Fr Muller Hospital Thumbay

Mangaluru: International Nurses Day was celebrated at Fr Muller Hospital, Thumbay. The theme for this year was “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure global health

Rev Fr Sylvester Vincent Lobo, Administrator, Fr Muller Hospital, Thumbay spoke first and welcomed all present. Rev Fr Richard Coelho, Director, FMCI presided over the event, Dr Dhanya Devasia CNO, FMMCH was the chief guest, and Rev Fr Sylvester Vincent Lobo, Administrator was present. Flower petals were placed on a picture of Florence Nightingale, and prayers were said.

The Director, Rev Fr Richard Coelho, delivered the Presidential address and acknowledged the nurses for their tireless contributions to healing and comforting the sick at the hospital. They are 24 into 7 service sometimes during the day sometime during the night or at any emergency going out of their comfort zone leaving aside family and also children,  He spoke of patients being the most important persons for them, how their healing touch is the most praiseworthy part of their work and invoked God’s blessings that the healing power in their hands pass to the patients and restore their well being.

Dr Dhanya Devasia CNO, FMMCH  reminded all present that nurses are the largest part of the workforce that contributes to the health and welfare of society.

Father Muller Hospital, Thumbay, has been conducting various programmes since 10 years. Many programmes will be held in the future as well, he said and added that the work is underway to start a Nursing College at Father Muller Hospital in Thumbay.

The services of nurses in the health sector are very important and without nurses, healthcare will be incomplete, said Father Muller Medical College Chief Nursing Officer Sr. Dhanya Devasia.

Speaking as the Chief Guest at the Nurses’ Day function held at Father Muller Hospital in Thumbay on Friday, May 13 to mark World Nurses’ Day, she said, “Nursing is not a profession but it is a service. So all nurses should be proud of themselves. Our first value should be service,” she said.

She observed that the nurses have suffered immensely during the pandemic. Society is not fully aware of the hardships they have gone through. The service of nurses has contributed in a big way to preventing the pandemic. Therefore, the nurses should be treated with respect, she said.

 She invited all her nursing fraternity to be grateful to the management who provides a conducive secure safe environment to work in and always encourages and provides opportunities for professional and personal growth

She congratulated all nurses for being the largest part of the health care professionals network on whom the health, the welfare and the development of the society depend. No health care setting can function without their presence. She recalled that  Florence Nightingale who was from a noble family and very intelligent chose this profession and she contributed her best, her intelligence and her energy,  we can see all that she did to accord the highest standard of respect to the profession of nursing. She observed that nurses worked to secure global health during the pandemic, even as they suffered tremendously being exposed to deadly virus attacks on the public and on their workforce,  extreme workloads, desperation, disrespect and even pain.

She reminded all the nurses that they have a responsibility to uphold the standard of this profession. Nurses have this responsibility to behave to be dignified knowledgeable and good members of this noble profession

She felt that the government and public and private agencies should invest in nursing by providing good training, fair income, a good and safe environment to work in, and respect for their rights.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions organised on the occasion of Nurses’ Day. Prizes were distributed to the nurses who rendered good service.

Father Muller Hospital Former CNO Sr. Janet D’Souza, Dina Urban, J. A. D’Souza, and Thumbay Hospital Medical Officer Kiran Shetty were present.
