Mudslide Mayhem in Nooyi: Poor Road Planning Triggers Crisis Amid Monsoon
Residents of Nooyi village in Addoor were left stunned after two days of torrential rainfall unleashed a massive mudslide, submerging homes and cutting off access to nearly 40 houses. The primary road became completely blocked, buried under layers of displaced soil.
The crisis coincides with the ongoing construction of the Bikarnakatte–Sanoor road, which villagers claim is riddled with flawed planning. They allege that over 10 feet of earth was used to elevate the road without the construction of a retaining wall, despite nearby homes being situated on lower ground.
With no structural support, heavy rains washed tons of loose mud into homes and farmlands, causing significant destruction. Locals report that they had repeatedly warned authorities about the risk and had even submitted written complaints, but their appeals were allegedly ignored.
Ironically, a retaining wall was constructed in a location where it wasn’t needed, further worsening the impact in vulnerable areas. Now, with the monsoon projected to last until November, residents fear worsening erosion, noting that cracks are already appearing in the saturated embankments.
The community is now urgently calling on government officials to intervene, halt unsafe construction, and act on previous neglected warnings. Villagers demand a thorough review of development practices to prevent further environmental and human harm.
