Mysuru: SL Bhyrappa, in his speech during the Dasara celebration inauguration, on Saturday, September 29 in Mysuru called for encouraging more and more inter-caste marriages to end the caste system in India.
In his 45-min speech, the celebrated writer lauded great social reformer Basavanna and called him the ‘true reformer’.
Bhyrappa touched upon various issues including philosophy and religion and also used the stage to take a dig at the communists.
“Inter-caste marriage is the only solution for the caste problem. Today caste has entered into our kitchens too. In such a situation, it is not easy to build a casteless society,” he said.
“Basavanna is a true social reformer. He spoke about the dignity of labor, casteless society and during an era when caste played a vital role in people’s lives, he spoke about reforms to abolish the same. The society then was not matured enough to understand the preachings of Basavanna,” he said.
Bhyrappa observed that the financial freedom attained by the women is the real game-changer which is allowing the women to make decisions about their lives independently. “This has resulted in more number of inter-caste marriages,” he observed.
“No one marries for the social reforms. Every one marries keeping in mind their own comfort. That is correct and in a way that is also a form of real social reform,” he said.
