Indian Scientist expresses Concern over Patent Rights secured by Westerners on Indian Foods

Mysore: The Indians are losing a few monopoly rights owing to westerners getting patents for our national foods, said CSIR scientist and J S S Institute Professor Dr V Prakash.

Dr Prakash was speaking after inaugurating national symposium on monopoly rights that was organized by J S S Law College in association with CII and MSME, here on Friday April 19.

‘Our traditional knowledge cannot be stolen by other nationals,’ said Dr Prakash.  The monopoly rights are  essential that should benefit the countrymen and it’s not important how much it would yield monetarily, said Dr Prakash.

When compared to statistics of 2 decades, the applications to seek patent rights have increased both globally and in India.  There are nearly 1,50,000 applications submitted internationally, while in India its accounted to be about 10,000, said Dr Prakash.
