State government holds workshop on Pre-metric Scholarship scheme

Mysuru: The government of Karnataka organized a one day workshop on pre-metric Scholarship scheme for representatives of education institutions, minority department of the state, nongovernmental organizations and general public at Kalamandir in the city on Wednesday.

The major objective of the programme was to educate concerned officials about the various governmental departments on National Scholarship Portal, an online portal being established to distribute various government sponsored scholarships among the beneficiaries of student community.

Speaking after inaugurating the workshop Minorities Welfare Directorate, Bengaluru Director Akram Pasha said “Karnataka state is at first position in implementing various schemes of Union Government for the welfare of the minorities in the state. In the case of scholarships as many as 10 lakh students from minority communities are getting Rs 3 Crore as pre-metric scholarships.”

“At present, the scheme has been processed through online and beneficiaries of the scheme need not apply for the scholarship through hard copy”, he said.

Pasha  said that the children from minority communities Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Parsi, Jain and Buddhist can apply for the scholarship. All pre-metric scholarships have been credited on time and no application at pending stage in the academic year 2013-14.

Information on the scholarship is available on www.gokdom.kar.nic. The education department has been supportive towards the minorities department and is keen on distributing the scholarship properly among the pre-metric students in the state. Both state and central government have been providing funds to the department to distribute the pre-metric scholarships to the students, Pasha added.

Describing the other initiatives taken by the Minorities department in the state Pasha pointed that the department has taken necessary steps to train the aspirants of IAS, KAS and other competitive examinations. As many as 100 students who are from economically weaker families were sent to abroad to pursue higher education.

Speaking on the school dropouts Pasha said the fact that the Minorities department has been conducting training class to reduce the number of dropouts. Those who have studied in Urdu medium up to their 10th standard sometime leave their education as they can’t join either Kannada or English medium school due lack of knowledge on the languages. Considering the issue the minorities department has been conducting coaching classes for the minorities, he added.

Senior Associate Director Ayesha Bhanu, Minorities Welfare Directorate Bengaluru, DDPIs from various districts of the state, A Puttaraju, Director Mysuru District Minorities Welfare Department and others were present on the occasion.
