NEET-UG in Mangaluru hits roadblocks with biometric woes and traffic chaos
For the very first time, the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) was conducted entirely across government and aided colleges in Dakshina Kannada, marking a major shift from earlier practices of including private institutions. The goal was to ensure a more transparent and disruption-free environment.
Despite extensive groundwork, several exam centres reported failures in biometric verification through Aadhaar integration. Due to the glitch, many aspirants were allowed to write the test without the mandatory identity confirmation. Officials clarified that these verifications would be completed post-examination.
A total of 9,080 students had registered for the exam, spread across 21 designated centres, most located in Mangaluru city and nearby regions. The sudden venue change created confusion among candidates and parents, especially those unfamiliar with the new locations.
Traffic bottlenecks and parking troubles were reported outside several centres, including Car Street Government First Grade College and Balmatta College. The lack of adequate signage and coordination added to the inconvenience, causing delays in reaching centres on time.
Furthermore, issues like weak internet, delayed frisking, and poor CCTV setup surfaced. According to insiders, external vendors responsible for technical infrastructure began arrangements too late. Several centres faced shortage of staff, with fewer than 10 personnel managing hundreds of students, resulting in long queues and anxious moments.
Officials emphasized the need for better planning, timely outsourcing, and increased technical manpower in future editions of the high-stakes exam.
