New Material Recovery Facility in Bantwal Set to Boost Waste Management
A new material recovery facility (MRF) in Shambhur, Bantwal taluk, is poised to enhance solid waste management for 57 gram panchayats across Bantwal and Ullal taluks. This facility, capable of processing up to seven tons of dry waste daily, is expected to commence operations shortly.
The project, developed on a one-acre site at an estimated cost of ₹1.9 crore, is funded under the Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat’s Swachh Bharat Mission Rural scheme, in collaboration with the rural drinking water and sanitation department. It aims to manage dry waste generated by 40 gram panchayats in Bantwal and 17 in Ullal.
The MRF at Shambhur follows the success of Dakshina Kannada’s first facility in Thenka Yedapadavu, which has been operational since January 2023 and processes waste from 51 gram panchayats.
With machines and civil infrastructure nearing completion, segregated dry waste from nearly one lakh households and commercial units will be transported to the facility for processing. The project employs a “Zero Rupee Model,” ensuring gram panchayats can participate without financial burden.
Bantwal MLA U Rajesh Naik confirmed that the work is finished, with a pooja ceremony already conducted. The facility is now set to play a key role in advancing waste management efforts in the region.
