Newborn found dead in Hassan drain, police launch probe
In a distressing discovery, residents of Kuvempunagar Extension, a well-known locality in Hassan city, found a newborn baby dead in a drain on Monday. Shockingly, the infant’s umbilical cord was still attached, pointing to the fact that it was abandoned immediately after birth.
Authorities currently have no leads, as there are no hospitals or clinics nearby that could connect to the incident. Adding to the tragedy, the infant’s face, chest, palms, and feet had turned dark, with visible scratches. Police teams are scrutinizing CCTV footage from the area for any possible clues.
Locals living near the drain believe the baby girl might have been born out of wedlock and discarded by the mother in a desperate act. Police suspect the perpetrator could belong to migrant families from neighboring states but are yet to confirm any details.
The newborn’s body has been shifted to the mortuary at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences for post-mortem examination.
This incident is eerily similar to a case from a year ago, when another baby girl was found abandoned in a drain at Hemavathi Nagar. That case remains unsolved, and now, the police are under pressure to crack both incidents.
Investigators are appealing to the public for any information that might lead to identifying those responsible.
