Nigerian national arrested in Chhattisgarh marriage scam
Rajnandgaon police in Chhattisgarh have arrested a Nigerian national, identified as Johnson, in connection with a marriage scam. The 40-year-old suspect is accused of defrauding a woman of Rs 15,72,000 after promising to marry her.
According to the police, Johnson created a fake profile on a matrimonial website and pretended to be a UK-based businessman looking to relocate his business to India. Gaining the woman’s trust, he convinced her to send money under the pretense of financial troubles.
The suspect, who had overstayed his visa and was residing in Delhi illegally, communicated with the victim through an associate. This associate falsely claimed that Johnson was stranded at Delhi airport and needed funds to exchange UK currency.
Rahul Dev Sharma, the Additional Superintendent of Police in Rajnandgaon, explained that the suspect, with the help of an accomplice, blackmailed the woman. When the victim could no longer reach the suspect, she realized she had been deceived and filed a fraud complaint with the Dongargarh Police Cyber Cell.
The police, with the help of the cyber cell, traced Johnson to Delhi, where they raided his residence and arrested him. He was found in possession of a laptop and four mobile phones, and his bank account has been frozen. The investigation is ongoing as the police work to gather further information.
