Students, educators and parents have faced many obstacles as a result of the pandemic. This has drawn attention to the mental health of those who have been affected by it. Experts are trying to understand and learn about the effects of the same on students and parents.

People usually do not express themselves or have someone with whom to share their inner thoughts or anxieties during this period. As a result, an expert listening partner is required to resolve mental and physical health issues of individuals. The Centre for Integrated Learning (CIL) Mangaluru, has recently introduced a Telephonic Motivational Conversation initiative to assist both students and parents during this lockdown.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka, Sachitha Nandagopal, Head of Department of Motivation and Training at Shaheen Group of Institutions in Bidar and Therapeutic Dance Movement Facilitator said that, “This is initiated through CIL by Srinivasan Nandagopal, Senior Journalist and Director of Department of Motivation and Training at Shaheen Group of Institutions in Bidar, Umar U. H., who is a Social Activist and Founder Chairman of The Campus Career Academy and me for the general public. Many students, particularly teenagers, are mentally stressed these days. Children who are struggling with mental health issues have been exposed to many changes. We try to motivate them and respond to their stress and anxiety through telephonic conversation. We want to give back to society by assisting them with their issue, which is why we decided to keep this accessible to the general public as well.”

When asked about how the team interacts in resolving the issues of students, Srinivasan Nandagopal said that, “Each child must be handled differently. We don’t give direct advice to students while we have a verbal discussion. Instead, we engage the child in a conversation in which he or she opens up. This will help them to come up with a solution on their own. We are just facilitators here.”

He went on to say that parents are equally responsible if students are suffering from anxiety, stress and other mental issues. Students are a reflection of parents and the ambience at home. “This year, 90 percent of students spend their time with their parents. After speaking with students, we discovered that parents are also to blame. That’s how we communicate with parents. They should also realise that if their children are depressed, they should seek help from people like us. Nowadays, people equate counselling with psychological issues and regard it as a psychiatric problem. It is necessary to remove the social stigma and get them help before it is too late,” added Nandagopal.

Through this platform, the team hopes to create a positive impact on society by lending a helping ear to the growing untold concerns of parents and students alike.
