During the second wave when the pandemic was claiming more and more lives everyday, there was an acute shortage of oxygen across the state. With Bengaluru being the epicentre of the covid in the state, the city experienced this crisis at double the rate.

Wanting to help calm the situation, RSS Seva Bharati started the ‘Vaayu Mithra’ initiative where volunteers provide oxygen concentrators to the people in need. Across Bengaluru, they have 14 centres where the team would home deliver the concentrators.

National secretary of ABVP and co-coordinator of Vaayu Mithra, Harsha Narayan said, “Bengaluru is a big city and when the crisis hit, everything was very less in number and there was not enough oxygen to provide for the demand in hand.” After consulting doctors and other experts, RSS volunteers along with Youth for Seva members started this service.

“The doctors explained to us that without oxygen, panic increases and to bring back their health to normal, steady supply of oxygen is needed,” said Harsha, “When there is no more panic, they can concentrate on getting better.” The volunteers along with other individuals and sponsors together came up with the funds for the service and acquired the concentrators. “Five of the concentrators are given to the Victoria hospital while remaining 70 of them are currently being used by various home isolated patients,” said Harsha.

When the volunteers receive a call through the helpline numbers, they input the data into their specific App. The panel of doctors that are available in their team 24/7 gives consultation, prescriptions and details of oxygen concentration, which is carried out by the volunteers. The people in need can also contact them with a proper doctor prescription. Free of cost concentrators are provided for them for five days a week after which they are returned and properly sanitised.

Harsha said that the team is receiving more than 200 calls per day and are planning to get 200 more concentrators for usage in the coming weeks. “This is a pilot service which we started only in Bengaluru two weeks back and by looking at the operation and the supply and demand rates, we would like to start this service across Karnataka,” he stated.

Harsha urges more NGOs and institutions to come forward to help the needy to save as many lives as possible. “The requirement is always high and if everyone can work to fulfil this small need then it can help to stop the panic that is spreading among the people,” Harsha added.
