Abu Dhabi: Clifford Joseph Rebello (54), who has been stranded in the UAE since 2014, is still struggling for his freedom.

It can be recalled that Rebello has been stranded in the UAE since July 2014 after his employer, Coppins Holdings illegally terminated his employment. His employer never paid his wages and also withheld his passport. Rebello’s situation was brought to the public’s attention by the efforts of a social activist (who wishes to remain anonymous) who contacted NewsKarnataka.com.

As Rebello still remains in illegal confinement, the social activist has written to the Prime Minister of India, seeking in help in freeing Rebello from his tragic situation.

In his email to the Prime Minister, dated November 4, the activist informed that Rebello has been in confinement for the past 20 days and that his situation was brought to the notice of the Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi, who in turn, informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation about the situation.

“…it is now more than 20 days Mr. Clifford is confined in the exile of the Employer without food and water. He is not allowed to go out and locked in the premises. This has been witnessed by Shri. Ramesh Chander of the Indian Embassy during his several personal meetings with Mr. Clifford. However, with the help of some friends and the Embassy, we have managed to supply food and water through some means of entry on humanitarian grounds,” he wrote, adding that Rebello’s “freedom of movement is restricted and thus is under mental torture by the Employer”.t

“What I understand is that Mr. Clifford needs an Advocate who can represent him in the Court and get the execution (enforcement of a court’s judgement) completed…On receiving his dues from the Court completely, Mr. Clifford will then leave to India on safe package. In the current situation Mr. Clifford is not able to pay the Advocate’s fees and either the Embassy or someone needs to help him out in this matter,” the activist goes on to write.

He then pleaded with PM Modi to help “save an Indian” and intervene in the matter so that justice can prevail.
