Goans to celebrate World Goa Day 2016 in Qatar

Doha: The Goan Welfare Association (GWA), one of Qatar’s leading and most notable community associations, is all set to celebrate World Goa Day 2016 with traditional pomp and splendour at the Mercure Grand Hotel, pool-side area on 21st October 2016 from 12.30 pm onwards. The Goans and Konkani speaking community members of all ages and classes will be celebrating Goa with culture, cuisine, customs, music and language on World Goa Day 2016, thus making the annual event a huge success as always.

The basic idea is to promote Goan culture, cuisine, customs, traditions, music and language,” says GWA president Simon D’Silva. It will display all grandeur and pageantry with immensely captivated traditions and delicious cuisine that will display the real essence and identity of Goa.

Goa, a tiny state of India, a land of sea and sand, is a former Portuguese territory. It was annexed by India in 1961. The Portuguese influence has left a great impact on the lifestyle, culture, cuisine, customs, tradition, music and its language. Konkani was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution by the Indian parliament on August 20, 1992, and Konkani was recognized as one of the official languages of India and the main language of Goa.

World Goa Day is celebrated across the globe including Canada, Australia, United States, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Spain, Pakistan, Germany and United Kingdom amongst others. However, the date for World Goa Day is August 20 but celebrated on different dates as per the community convenience in different regions.

It will be a fun filled celebration with live performances by multi-talented local artists like Peter Camillo, Vincy D’Costa, Jr. Roseferns, Perpetua Pereira, Natcey Barretto, Rosario Dias, Mimicry masala by Amresh Kamat, John De Sa.

To add more glamour to the event, the winners of Doha finalist Clement Fernandes and Carol D’Souza for Gulf Voice of Mangalore (GVOM 2016) to be held in Bahrain next month will also render their melodious voice during the World Goa Day. Agnelo Rodrigues will compose the live music and the sizzling young, dynamic ace compere and Doha resident, Mahesh Prabhu will emcee the event with his unique style of compering. DJ Glorio will set the floor on fire with his scintillating music.
