KPG organises fun-filled family picnic in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: Konkani Prayer Group [KPG] held its much-awaited annual family picnic on Friday, February 5, 2016 at the Al Wathba Park, Abu Dhabi. The programme which was attended by more than 160 plus members of KPG, was based on the theme ‘rejoice always’.

The picnic started with a praise and worship session led by core team member Anil Karvalho. Coordinator of KPG, Rupert Vaz welcomed the members for the daylong event. Core Team member Sharmila D’Souza explained the rules and gave instructions to the participants. Thereafter, KPG member Deral Menezes offered a perfect start to the day with few warm-up exercises.

Soon after, the attendees were divided into 10 groups and were pitted against one another to win a series of fun games. The picnic committee consisting of Conrad D Souza, Lancy D’Souza, Joel Crasta, Yvonne Vaz, Rosy Martis and the other Core Team members conducted various interesting games during the morning session. There were a variety of games like passing the hula-hoop, bursting the balloon, eating fruits and vegetables and the tug-of-war.All the games kept the groups totally occupied.

The weather was perfect, sunny and pleasant to make everyone participate actively in all the group activities. While older members were involved in their games, the children too had their own dose of fun with special games organized for them in a separate kids’ area.

Deral Menezes organized games like Bombing the city, lemon n spoon, dodge ball and tug of war. This was followed by a group dance competition by all the groups called “Dance KPG Dance”. The talented young and old members alike brought a festive spirit with their spirited dancing to the Konkani, Hindi and English songs. Then Core team member Ozwald Martis prayed the ‘Grace before Meals’ after which a sumptuous lunch was served.

For the post-lunch session, each group was given a Portfolio to complete which had seven activities such as Bible Quiz, Group Photo in the air, Poster making, getting the names of birthday celebrants in different months etc.

The final act of the day was a presentation of comedy skits by all the groups on the topics given in the portfolio. Every group did an excellent job with the portfolio and also presented skits with rib tickling comedy. The judges for the skits were Joel Crasta, Valerian D’Almeida, Lancy D’Souza and Rupert Vaz. The tug-of war finals were conducted soon after the skits which was applauded and cheered by all the group members.

Finally, the names of the winning groups were announced and prizes were distributed by KPG core team members. Children also won many prizes and were presented with goodies. Few household items were given away as prizes to the group members who won the raffle draws. The member of News Karnataka team, Valerian Almeida gave away a years’ subscription of “Karnataka Today” magazine to the winners of Best Actor and Best Actress Awards.

The day was concluded with a vote of thanks by the Asst. Coordinator of KPG, Flavia Crasta followed by the KPG Family Group Picnic photo session.

The Konkani Prayer Group consisting of Konkani speaking members from Mangalore and Udupi Diocese, North Kanara, Goa, Mumbai and other parts of India meet every Friday in the evening from 8 to 9 pm in the Assisi Hall of St. Joseph’s Cathdral, Abu Dhabi wherein they conduct praise and worship, listening to the Word of God, monthly adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

KPG is lead by an eight member core team elected by the members for a term of two years, ably guided by its Spiritual Guide, Rev. Fr. Rodson Goes, OFM (Cap).
